The Economic Development Department is committed to enhancing, improving and expanding the business climate throughout the City of Georgetown. Our historic downtown attracts a wide array of visitors which is more conducive to small retailers, restaurants, and professional businesses. However, our corridors are ripe for national retailers and developers that are considering expansion. We are available to assist with market research, site selection, zoning assistance, and anything else that will help bring rewarding businesses to our community.
Georgetown is a relatively small city, but our trade area is much larger. It has become the retail center for Georgetown County and much of Williamsburg County. Retail sales in 2007 exceeded $276 million and Accommodation and Food Services Sales exceeded $35 million. Being on the coast, Georgetown gets a regular influx of affluent 2nd homeowners throughout the year to the beaches and plantation properties. The traditional Grand Strand vacationers will swell the economy during the tourist season, which has expanded beyond the summer.
Our quaint Lowcountry quality of life, with walkable neighborhoods, vibrant downtown business district, access to quality healthcare, and true sense of community regularly attracts relocating new residents from all over the country.
In addition to our own Port of Georgetown for bulk and bulkbreak shipping, Georgetown has easy access to the Port of Charleston’s container terminals, which is the 4th most busiest port on the East Coast. Georgetown is also strategically positioned for businesses in the supply channel for Charleston’s aerospace and defense clusters like Boeing and SPAWAR Atlantic. The City has limited industrial sites available, but we are ready to assist the Georgetown County Economic Development team when needed for opportunities that need our workforce and desire our quality of life.
